A little bit snockered……

October 31st, 2007 by ec

Well…ya gotta love Versed.  Everything is just so…pretty…right now….

So….here’s my crazy story of the day.

That Novasure procedure?  Didn’t happen.

Nope.

At my pre-op consultation, my OB/GYN informed me that if there is anything structurally wrong with my “condominium”, the machine that does the procedure would shut off and basically pout and refuse to work.  (My words, not hers.)

She said that this has only happened to her a few times.

I’ve learned that if there’s something weird that can happen…it’s oh so likely going to happen to me.

Ah, yeah.

She was able to do a D&C, which in my experience with that surgery, will probably help me out for a few months.  So it wasn’t completely unproductive.

But now I’ve got some decisions to make.   I see her in two weeks and we’ll sit down and hash out options.  The “big H” came up in her post-op conversation with Doug, so that’s on the table….I’m just not sure I’m ready to go there.

I’m really o.k. with what happened.  Disappointed, yes.  But I KNOW how much Doug and I have prayed over this thing and how much my family and church family have prayed over it, so I have NO doubt that the right thing happened today by having the procedure fail.

One interesting thing is that the reaction of the machine clearly indicated structural problems.  The possibilities that she mentioned to Doug might actually explain the miscarriage that I had last summer.  It’s strangely comforting somehow…I know and knew last year so intimately God’s peace in that whole thing…it’s just always nice to get some possible explanations as opposed to “well, these things just happen…”

So, there you have it.  I’m good….I’m goosey….and I’ve got dark chocolate.  Life is mighty fine around here.

Thank you for praying for me.

Closing down the condominium….

October 30th, 2007 by ec

Not too many posts around this little blog lately….I’m running around like the proverbial headless chicken trying to prepare for surgery tomorrow. It’s no biggie…but I’m praying that it works.  Since this is a family show, let’s just say that the vagrants have broken into Noah and Isaac’s former condominium and are creating all kinds of havoc there.  Tomorrow’s surgery will render said condo uninhabitable…and hopefully will  keep me from needing the mother of all female surgeries…the big “H”.   For those of you who just love medical mysteries, the name of the procedure is Novasure.   I go in at 8 in the morning and should be home by early afternoon, ready for a long winter’s nap.

So…trying to get ready for this is a little crazy.  I should only be down for a couple of days, but as you mommies know, in dog years a couple of days out of commission might as well be three weeks.

My parents, as usual, are keepers of our boys.   I have NO idea what I would do without them.

Doug is in charge of me….he is a wonderful nurse.  He is great at spoiling me, so I’m certainly not worried about my needs being taken care of.

Hmmmm….here’s what else is up…..

Some rich lady who wears my size is donating all kinds of ritzy clothing…labels like Ann Taylor and J.Jill…to our local children’s shelter thrift store.  I picked up some really fancy dress slacks and khakis the other day for $2.50 each.  I hope she cleans her closet out again in the next few days….I still need a few things for the National Autism Association conference.

Speaking of the conference…I can’t wait.  The mom that I’m staying with is going to pick me up at the airport and take me to Parkwood Farms, the center whose exhibit booth I will be working in.  I am so excited to see the center and meet the director.

I cleaned out my car yesterday.  That was a serious exercise in scary.

Noah is still doing great with the Teachtown software.  The next few days of a weird schedule will not allow for much practice, but I’m confident that he enjoys it enough that we won’t have any trouble getting him back on track.  If you have a child with autism, or know someone who does, I would highly recommend this program.  It is really amazing.

Don’t know if I’ll post tomorrow…although it could be interesting and kinda fun with the happy drugs I’ll be on.

Off to run some more errands….

Girly bling and Tow-Mater…

October 27th, 2007 by ec

My niece Ella is three years old.  This morning we had a little family birthday party for her.

Since I’m an “all-boy” mama, I don’t get many chances to shop for little girly-chick clothes and toys.  When my nieces’ birthdays come up, or I go to a baby girl shower, shopping is suddenly fun.

My Ella is especially fun to shop for because she is, most definitely, an original.  Part girly-girl, part tomboy….Ella is just her own little funny self.   I think that she calls me “her favorite” (which I just LOVE, by the way), because she somehow knows that I’m a bit “out there” also.  We seem to “get” each other.

Since Ella told me the other day that she wanted a bracelet for her birthday, I headed over to the Disney store to buy a “princess” bracelet.  I promptly found a pink ”pearl” Sleeping Beauty bracelet….decorated with lovely “diamonds” and assorted “gems”.  Next, I found an exceptionally tacky ”Princess Jasmine” necklace, bracelet and earring set that I could not resist.

Somehow my shopping didn’t seem complete.  Looking around the store, I found it….a plush Tow-Mater from “Cars”.  Perfect.  Bling and Mater.  That’s my girl.

Ella received a beautiful dollhouse from the family….complete with all kinds of accessories (even a flat screen TV for the dolls’ living room….hello?).  Know which gifts she carried around the rest of the morning?  Yep.  Mater, her Jasmine bling….and a flowery hammer that her brother Jason gave her.

That’s my girl.

Noah’s teacher rocks….

October 26th, 2007 by ec

So you know that TeachTown software that I got for Noah like two months ago?

It is WONDERFUL.

Until today, Noah wouldn’t go near it.

We set it up on our home computer first.  Nothin.  Noah had NO interest…just ignored my every attempt to entice him to sit down and work.

After hearing Temple Grandin speak about children with visual processing problems, I decided that we needed to load the software on our laptop and try again.  (Apparently laptop screens don’t have the “flicker” that regular computer screens have and are better for children with visual processing issues.) Noah gave it a few glances…but still had no interest in sitting down and doing the lessons.

Which leads us to today.

It’s a student holiday/teacher workday.  Noah’s teacher, who loves the TeachTown software, offered to come over and work with us on it.

Bingo!

Noah resisted a little bit at first, but sat and did three separate lessons with Mrs. B.  He smiled and even laughed a little bit.

I thanked Mrs. B profusely as she left…wondering the whole time if it would “stick”.  Would Noah sit down with me later and do the lessons….or would I need to offer to adopt Mrs. B and have someone new live with us permanently?

We went to Target to grocery shop after Mrs. B left.  After the groceries were put away, I said to Noah….”time for TeachTown!”

You know what he did?

That child sat right down in front of the computer with me, smiled and got to work!

I’m thinking about hiring Mrs. B full-time.  I’ve got a three year old that needs to be potty trained….

Ummm….I don’t think that I came here today for a tonsilectomy….

October 25th, 2007 by ec

So yesterday I had a biopsy.

No worries….just a routine part of preparation for surgery that I’m having next week.  (More on that another day.  Again, no worries. I’m otay.)

In the interest of attempting to be discreet here, let’s just say that the procedure involved going in to the condominium that housed Noah and Isaac while I was pregnant and taking a piece of wallpaper off of the wall to send to the lab.

I had this type of biopsy done 8 years ago…it was a big OUCH, but really quick and no big deal.

Yesterday’s procedure?  Not so much.

The alarm bells went off when the nurse midwife who works with my OB/GYN walked in to the room.  Now…I love midwives…A fabulous midwife delivered Noah.  This one….not so much.

The trouble started immediately.  This chick….let’s just call her “C”….”went in”.  A few minutes later, she gets this puzzled look on her face.  “Hmmmmm”…she muses…”Now, how do I get into your cervix?”

HUH?

C continues.  Says to the assistant….”well…let’s just try that thing (pointing to an instrument on the counter)…what is that called again?”

O.k.  So she isn’t really sure how to get in to my cervix and doesn’t know what the little “thingy” that she will be using to get into said cervix is called.  Not. good.

After some unpleasantness, she says to the assistant….”Hmmm…..Can you show me her ultrasound pictures?”

THIS CHICK NEEDS A ROAD MAP?????!!!

Tries again.

“C” to the assistant….”Can I see that ultrasound again?”  Apparently she got lost trying to get from the front door to the living room.

By now the pain has increased from just irritating  me to the point that I had to use every ounce of strength to not yell out “EXCUSE ME…I DID NOT COME HERE TODAY FOR A TONSILECTOMY!!!”

Finally “C” gave up.  She said to the assistant, “Do we have enough of a sample?”  (So she doesn’t even know what constitutes an appropriate lab sample?)

The assistant wasn’t so sure, but I let them know that, in my opinion, it was sufficient.  I was done.

How on earth does this girl manage to deliver babies?  I hope that there are always good nurses around her, showing her where to sit and wait.

If this chick every walks into an  exam room that I’m waiting in again, I’m running.
